Situated on the banks of the River Spey, the country estate with the mysterious name “Easter Elchie House” sits gracefully on a hill near Craigellachie. Here, where the Spey takes its swift course in the shadow of the Grampian Mountains, the location and climate create unique conditions for whisky production.
The distillery was first licensed by Alexander Reid in 1824. The distillery was initially run as a sideline on the farm until 1882, when it was taken over by Roderick Kemp, whose family led the business to prosperity over the next hundred years.
The secret lies, among other things, in Macallan’s cask management.
The whiskies in the Sherry Oak line mature in hand-picked casks made from European oak, in which dry Oloroso Sherry de Jerez was previously stored.
Whiskies in the Double Cask range are matured in hand-selected American and European oak casks previously filled with dry Oloroso sherry.
A rich and intense single malt. Its rich golden colour is purely the result of cask maturation. Its elegant character offers plenty of woody spices and dried fruit.
Macallan Sherry Oak 18 Years Old
A full-bodied palate with flavours of toasted oak, ginger and sultanas is complemented by a bright, natural mahogany colour. Rich and complex in character.
Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old
The perfect balance of two casks results in this harmonious single malt and creates a sweet, well-rounded whisky with notes of honey, citrus and ginger that tells its own story.
Macallan Double Cask 15 Years Old
American oak imparts delicate flavours of vanilla, citrus and butterscotch. European oak provides the unmistakable subtle spice and sparkling golden colour.
Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old
Perfectly balanced single malt Scotch matured for 18 years. The American wood gives it a flavour of delicate vanilla, while the European wood provides a sweet, warmer character.
Macallan Rare Cask
The selection of rare casks with special maturation gives the mahogany-red whisky an intense, sweet sultana note and creamy chocolate, coupled with an incredibly rich, smooth complexity.
